About Alamogordo

Founded in 1898 when the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad arrived to expand further west, Alamogordo has grown into one of the ten largest cities in New Mexico. An early example of a planned city, Alamogordo was laid out and built according to a pre-made layout. The town grew, eventually fueled by a variety of sources outside the railroad, including the military and the establishment of what eventually became Holloman Air Force Base, which remains the largest employer in town. The nearby former “USAAF Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range” (now White Sands Missle Range) contributed to the town’s place in the history books due to the first atomic bomb test held there in 1945.

Today, there’s a lot to do when you visit Alamogordo, as well as nearby Cloudcroft and Holloman AFB. Fun can be had at the Alameda Park Zoo or Flickinger Center for Performing Arts, depending on how many legs you like your entertainment to have. History buffs will appreciate the New Mexico Museum of Space History which includes the International Space Hall of Fame, which honors persons who have made great contributions to the advancement of space flight and technology. Nearby Cloudcroft was listed in Fodor's in 2002 as the Number 3 "Most Overlooked and Underrated Destination Spot."
