About Carlsbad

The history of Carlsbad begins with a town known as Eddy in 1888. Named after a cattle baron, the town’s livelihood initially relied on its natural water supplies for cattle grazing. The expanding development of the mineral springs for their medicinal qualities led to renaming the town after a famous spa in Europe, Carlsbad. The arrival of the railroad led to further growth, as did the production of mineral, oil, and natural gas resources over the years.

Today those industries form the backbone of the Carlsbad economy, but if you’re visiting it’s likely the awe-inspiring Carlsbad Caverns will be higher on the list of places to visit. There is more to see, including the nearby Guadalupe Mountains and the Lincoln National Forest, making Carlsbad a center for tourism in New Mexico. If you’re looking for something with more easily spotted wildlife, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park offers over forty native species like bobcats and cougars as well as kit foxes and prairie dogs.
