About Deming

Deming grew up around the railroad on land that was part of the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. The city began in 1881 and was incorporated 21 years later. The city’s history began on an auspicious note, with the meeting of the second transcontinental railroad in the United States. The silver spike driven there connected the Southern Pacific with the Rio Grande, Mexico, and Pacific railroads. Rail remains a key part of the city’s economy today, as a major hub for transportation for both rail and road networks.

Today Deming is the largest city in the area between Las Cruces and Silver City, a major stopping point for travelers and goods. The city and the area around it is steeped in Native American history and much of it features in the Deming Luna Mimbres museum. Be sure to visit in August during the Great American Duck Race. Watch as winged waterfowl compete to be the fastest on two flippers, and catch the Tournament of Ducks Parade. Deming can be seen in some major motion pictures as a setting that leverages the beautiful desert landscape around the town.
