About Roswell

The history of Roswell dates back to 1869 with a humble couple of buildings that would become the post office and general store. The owner, Van Smith, filed a claim in 1871 and named the new town after his father. The discovery of a major water source spurred growth. Walker Air Force Base opened in 1941 and a certain incident in 1947 eventually led to a significant boom in the tourism economy.

Today, Roswell serves as a major producer of mozzarella cheese and is home to a branch of Eastern New Mexico University. Art lovers will appreciate the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, located on East College Blvd which has a significant collection of works from their long running Artist-in-Residence program. The Spring River Zoo offers thirty-four acres of parkland and fascinating animals. History buffs will certainly appreciate the information on display at the Historical Society For Southeast New Mexico.

Finally, you may notice a significant amount of “alien” and UFO-themed museums, festivals, and attractions in town.
